  3. Capacitor Value Reading

  6. Capacitors of these types (ceramic, various plastic films) are coded
  7. in pF, the last two digits being the number of zeroes following the
  8. first two digits. 
  9.         e.g. 104 = 10 0000 => 100,000pF => 0.1uF.
  10. The values are sometimes coded as colour bands on some types of caps.

  12. The letter following the value is usually a tolerance code (IEC 62, BS1852):
  13. C = +/-0.25pF   D = +/-0.5pF   F = +/-1%   G = +/-2%
  14. J = +/-5%       K = +/-10%     M = +/-20%  Z = -20 +80%

  16. The coloured end of single plate ceramic caps indicates the temperature
  17. coefficient of the dielectric:
  18. green      = high K
  19. yellow     = medium K
  20. red/violet = +100ppm/deg C
  21. black      = zero TC
  22. brown      = -150ppm/deg C
  23. violet     = -750ppm/deg C
  24. brown/red  = -1500ppm/deg C

  26. There may also be a material code used for plastic films as follows:
  27. MKT = Metallised polyester
  28. MKC = Metallised polycarbonate
  29. KT  = Polyester film/foil
  30. KS  = Polystyrene film/foil
  31. KP  = Polypropylene film/foil
  32. MKP = Metallised polypropylene
